Kevin Pitt Memorial Match

Kevin Pitt Memorial Match
25 JUNE 2024
Kevin bravely fought against the illness that was to take him from his beloved wife Lorraine, his family & his friends 2 months ago. It was his wish that a celebration of his life was held at Egerton Park Indoor bowling Club. In recent years this was Kevin’s second home. He quickly became an excellent bowler thanks to great enthusiasm & practise.
Kevin was a keen collector of badges & shirts. He took great delight in generating team spirit. Many of us have his little badges with an aeroplane, a Saxon axe or a special personal emblem. He was proud when only last year he wore his “Captain of the Day” badge for the first time. This was a particularly tough away game at Adur. Kevin’s rink had a close game against their top players & Egerton suffered a loss on all rinks. Kevin gave a very witty speech saying it would not deter him from being Captain again! He only had a few weeks to wait for success. To his delight it a home game against a strong Spartans side. Kevin was a Spartans member proudly winning the newcomers cup outdoors.
Kevin was always keen to encourage others. He started an “achievements board” for those who won a cup or were awarded a hot shot badge. It wasn’t a surprise when he earned his own spot on the board. He was a strong supporter of the summer drive. Kevin noted that there was a table running throughout the summer but there was no trophy for the winner. He not only donated the cup 2 years ago but he also supplied very generous prizes.
A group of his friends, including the 2 winners of Kevin’s cup, held a match in his honour today before the restaurant event. A sprinkling of Kevin’s Saxons & aeroplane shirts adorned with badges were to be spotted. The top score went Sandra, Mary & Tim with a 14 : 5 Victory. On the next rink a closer game was being fought. On the penultimate end with a single shot score difference there was a tie with the jack being sandwiched between opposing woods. Anne was having a great game & was on the jack on the last end. On her last wood Tink trailed the jack thinking this may be enough for a draw. Opposing skip John then drew shot only for skip Barry to curl in closer. The result was a draw. A game Kevin would have relished !
It was good to have this cracking finish as the club was filling with friends & family. Drinks in hand the restaurant was packed out. We were captivated by a running photo show of Kevin through the years. Almost every shot was with his cheeky smile. His love of dressing up & having a good time was contrasted by falling asleep with his dog. He had hair ..the bowlers didn’t recognise him ! We were thanked by Lorraine for attending before enjoying a good spread & chat with many an anecdote about good times with Kevin.
Goodbye dear friend
